Postoperative Care Instructions for Dental Implant Surgery

1. Do not brush your teeth within 24 hours after the surgery. Frequent gargling will cause the wound to ooze blood. However, you can rinse your mouth with mouthwash after meals to prevent food residues in the mouth. You can eat and drink in moderation within 2 hours after the surgery, and the food and drink should not be too hot.

2. Antibiotics were routinely used postoperatively. For simple implant surgery (few implants, short surgery time, and the patient's body recovers well), antibiotics can be taken orally after surgery. Intravenous antibiotics are required for complex implant surgery to prevent infection.

3. Due to the different physiques and surgical procedures of patients, there will be different surgical reactions. Some patients have mild or no reactions, while some patients will have partial edema, which usually last for about 3-5 days.

4. Postoperative patients generally only have mild dull pain or discomfort, and do not need to take painkillers. However, if the patient is sensitive or feels pain, an additional painkiller can be used 3 days after the surgery. Under normal circumstances, 24 hours after the surgery, the patient will no longer feel constant pain.

5. The sutures are removed 7-10 days after the surgery, and timely removal of the stitches can prevent infection.

Daily Care of Dental Implants

1. Keep the month clean

The tiny gap between the implant and the implant abutment can harbor microorganisms. Therefore, patients with dental implants should pay more attention to the maintenance of daily oral hygiene.

● Brush teeth morning and night

● Use dental floss and interdental brushes to clean between teeth

● Use ultra-fine high-pressure pulsed water jets generated by flossers to clean plaque

● Mouthwash can be used for daily cleaning and maintenance

2. Quit Smoking

Compared with non-smokers, smokers often have more obvious signs of inflammation. Therefore, for patients who have implant restoration, smoking cessation is one of the necessary measures to obtain a longer-term effect.

3. Regular checkups

It is recommended that patients with implanted dentures return to the clinic every 2-3 months after the restoration is completed. After that, those who have no abnormalities can go back to the dentist every six months to one year.

The dentist will evaluate the patient's oral hygiene maintenance, and use instruments to remove plaque and calculus deposits around the implant, including ultrasonic cleaning, manual scaling, sandblasting, and laser treatment.

Some cases may require surgical treatment, such as resection surgery to shallow the periodontal pocket, modify the bone shape, and regenerative surgery to promote bone regeneration around the implant, etc.

The careful care of dental implants is also the process of treating oral diseases. It is necessary to learn how to use and protect dental implants correctly, so as to ensure the complete success of dental implants.
