The implant abutment is called abutment for short. It is installed on the implant platform anchored in the bone and extends it into the oral cavity; It is used to link, support and retain the prosthesis or implant superstructure. Therefore, it is also called transmucosal abutment.
The abutment obtains the retention, torsion resistance and positioning ability through the internal abutment link or the external abutment link structure. There are many types of abutments and their classification is complex. It can be linked to the superstructure according to the way it is linked to the implant; The composition, structure, manufacturing method, use and materials of the abutment are classified.
In clinic, prefabricated abutments are widely used, which are divided into two types: prefabricated non adjustable abutments and prefabricated adjustable abutments.

Prefabricated pedestal
Prefabricated abutments cannot be adjusted to finished abutments, and no adjustment is allowed in clinical application.
Prefabricated adjustable pedestal
There are two types of prefabricated adjustable base platforms. One is that the finished base platform can be directly used without adjustment, and limited adjustment is allowed in the mouth or on the working model of the patient. The other is that the prototype of the base platform with the base platform link must be adjusted and shaped before use, which is called adjustable grinding base platform.
Implant abutment implant material
Ceramic materials: including biological inert ceramics, bioactive ceramics, biodegradable ceramics, etc. It has the characteristics of high mechanical strength, corrosion resistance, no irritation and toxicity, and tissue compatibility. It is also used clinically.
Carbon materials: including glass carbon, low-temperature isotropic carbon, etc. The advantage is that the organism has high stability and no biodegradation.
Metal and alloy materials: including gold, 316L stainless steel (iron chromium nickel alloy), cast cobalt chromium alloy, titanium and alloy, etc. Its advantages are high strength and good rigidity, but its bio mechanical adaptability and tissue and bone adaptability are poor.
Polymer materials: including acrylate, polytetrafluoroethylene, etc. Some polymer materials have similar chemical structure to the natural polymer in human structure, but they are easy to be degraded and stimulate organisms.
Composite materials: composite of the above two or more materials, such as metal surface sprayed with ceramics. Human teeth are often complex containing organic and inorganic complex components.
